MONTREAL –
Deanna Foster of Caledon, Ont., and
Massimo Di Ioia of Blainville, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub & Grill, for the period ending Sept. 29, 2013.
Foster, a 5-foot-8 fullback with the women's rugby team, scored six tries and accounted for 30 points as McGill overwhelmed Bishop's 109-5 in RSEQ regular season play at Ste. Anne de Bellevue, Sunday. Foster, a 19-year-old political science sophomore, ranks second among the league's try leaders with nine in five games, one shy of the league lead. As a freshman last year, she only tallied twice in six contests. Foster is a product of Mayfield secondary school in Caledon.
Di Ioia, a 5-foot-7, 154-pound forward with the Redmen soccer squad, was in on all three of McGill's goals scored last weekend, with two markers and an assist, and earned player-of-the-game honours in both contests. Originally from St. Leonard, Que., the 26-year-old physical education major scored the opening goal in a 1-1 tie with visiting Laval on Sept. 27. He then tallied the opener and set up the winning goal in a 2-1 victory at Concordia, Sunday. It's the second McGill weekly award for Di Ioia, who currently leads the RSEQ conference in scoring with six goals and one assist in seven games. A product of Vanier College, he has been part of the Canadian national development program and previously played two seasons for the Montreal Impact.
Both athletes will receive a gift certificate from Ye Olde Orchard Pub.
