MONTREAL – Soccer players
Massimo Di Ioia of Blainville, Que., and
Meghan Bourque of Burlington, Ont., are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub & Grill, for the period ending Sept. 15, 2013.
Di Ioia, a 5-foot-7, 154-pound forward with the Redmen, scored four goals in two games over the weekend, netting all four in a 4-2 come-from-behind victory against Concordia at Molson Stadium, Sunday evening. Originally from St. Leonard, Que., the 26-year-old physical education major had given the Redmen a 1-0 advantage in the eighth minute of play but the Stingers regained the lead minutes later with back-to-back goals. Undaunted, Di Ioia then responded with three more goals – in the 24th, 28th and 75th minutes – to give the Redmen their first victory of the season and improve their record to 1-2-1. Di Ioia, who has been part of the Canadian national development program and previously played two seasons for the Montreal Impact, is a product of Vanier College.
Bourque, a 5-foot-9 forward, scored three goals and added an assist as the Martlets won two weekend contests. The 20-year-old physiology senior tallied the game-winner in McGill’s 2-1 decision over visiting UQTR last Friday, then added a pair of markers and assisted on the winning goal during a 10-minute span of a 3-1 decision over Concordia on Sunday. She joined the Martlets in 2010 as a 16-year-old out of Notre Dame Catholic secondary school.
Both athletes will receive a gift certificate from Ye Olde Orchard Pub.
