MONTREAL –
Vincent Dufort of Smiths Falls, Ont., and
Alana Battiston of Toronto are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub & Grill, for the period ending March 10, 2013.
Dufort, a 6-foot-5, 200-pound shooting guard on the men’s basketball team, led the Redmen in both points (47) and rebounding (23) over three games at the CIS Final Eight national championship in Ottawa last weekend, where McGill posted a 2-1 record to finish fifth overall. The 20-year-old physical and health education sophomore shot 47.5 per cent from the field (19/40), 29.4 from three-point range (5/17) and made four of seven free-throws. He also won the tourney's Robert Pugh Fair Play Award as the most sportsmanlike player. Dufort is a product of Smiths Falls District Collegiate Institute.
Battiston, a fifth-year senior on the women's track and field team, broke her own school record and finished fifth overall at the CIS track and field championship over the weekend. A 5-foot-10 science student, the 25-year-old Battiston registered 3,558 points in the pentathlon, which beat her mark of 3,515 established at the RSEQ championship meet two weeks ago.. Battiston also finished 12
th in the 60m hurdles (9.46 seconds) and ran the third leg of the 4x800 relay which finished ninth (9:20.98). Battiston graduated from McGill with a BSc in 2010 but returned last fall to work on a second degree in dietetics. Prior to enrolling at McGill, she attended Michael Power high school.
Both athletes will receive a gift certificate from Ye Olde Orchard Pub.
