MONTREAL – Basketball player
Mariam Sylla, a native of Guinea, and the men's track team's 4x800m relay squad, composed of (
Benjamin Raymond of Laval, Que.,
Javier Montalvo of Closter, N.J.,
Michael Abramson of Westmount, Que., and
Vincent Parent-Pichette from St. Paul de Joliette, Que. are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub & Grill, for the period ending Feb. 3, 2013.
Sylla, a 6-foot-1 rookie centre, registered a “double-double” in back-to-back games as the Martlets split their two games last week. The 20-year-old pharmacology freshman tallied 38 points and grabbed 26 rebounds, to go along with four blocks and a steal. She shot 36.4 per cent from the field (12/36) and 73.7 from the foul-line (14/19). Sylla had 23 points and 11 rebounds in a 73-56 win at Bishop's, followed by a 15-point, 15-rebound effort in a 71-66 loss to No.10-ranked Concordia last Friday. Prior to enrolling at McGill, Sylla starred for College Montmorency.
The 4x800m relay team broke an 18-year-old school record in New York City on Saturday at the 12th annual Armory Collegiate Invitational, an indoor meet that features more than 100 university and collegiate teams. The quartet, which finished fifth overall in seven minutes, 40.74 seconds, featured Raymond, a physical education freshman, on the leadoff leg, followed by Montalvo, an arts freshman, Abramson, an economics sophomore and Parent-Pichette, a physical education freshman, on the anchor leg. They erased the old mark of 7:41.90 set in 1995. Finishing ahead of McGill in the race was Columbia (7:30.15), followed by Duke (7:30.24), Texas A & M (7:31.79) and Albany (7:38.61).
Each athlete will receive a gift certificate from Ye Olde Orchard Pub.
