MONTREAL – Swimmers
Clément Secchi, from Aix-en-Provence in southern France, and
Daphné Danyluk of Rivière-des-Prairies, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending on Feb. 23, 2020.
Secchi, a 5-foot-10 sprinter, guided McGill to a fourth-place finish on the men's side at the U SPORTS national championship meet in Victoria, B.C. He earned first-team All-Canadian honours with a pair of gold medals and one bronze while accounting for an impressive 135.5 points or 39.4 per cent of the team's scoring. The 19-year-old management sophomore set a championship meet record with his gold medal performance in the 50m backstroke, clocking in at 25.82 seconds. He also struck gold in the 100 butterfly (53.55) and helped the 4x100 freestyle relay win bronze in 3:27.42. Secchi reached the finals in seven events, including three fourth-place results (50 fly, 100 back, 4x100 MR) in addition to a fifth-place finish (4x200 free).
Danyluk, a 5-foot-7 sprinter, led McGill to a seventh-place finish on the women's side at the U SPORTS national championship meet in Victoria, B.C. A 21-year-old science freshman majoring in anatomy and cellular biology, she merited second-team All-Canadian status and became the first member of the Martlets swim team to be named U SPORTS female rookie of the year. She competed in seven events, won silver in the 50m backstroke (28.99) and tallied 119.5 points to account for 34.8 per cent of the team points total. Danyluk also posted three fourth-place finishes (100 back, 200 back, 4x100 medley relay), was sixth in the 200 butterfly, eighth in the 4x200 freestyle relay and 11th in the 4x100 free.
