MONTREAL –
Clement Secchi a native of Aix-en-Provence in France, and
Jade Downie-Landry of St. Jean sur Richelieu, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week, for the period ending Feb. 24, 2019.
Secchi, an 18-year-old management freshman, won three medals and led the Redmen swim team to a fourth-place finish of 26 teams at the U SPORTS national championships in Vancouver, Feb. 21-23. The 5-foot-10, 140-pound sprinter earned all-Canadian honours after winning gold in the 50m backstroke (25.15) and bronze in the 100m butterfly (54.64). He also captured bronze as part of the 4x200 freestyle relay (7:39.35). It was quite a meet for Secchi, who broke McGill and RSEQ records in both the 100m backstroke (53.29) and 200m backstroke (1:57.04).
Downie-Landry, a 5-foot-8 forward with the Martlets hockey team, scored six points, including five assists, in two playoff games as McGill upset second-seeded Concordia in a best-of-three semifinal series last week. The 23-year-old psychology junior scored once and added three assists in a 6-2 win at Concordia on Feb. 21, including a helper on a shorthanded goal that proved to be the game-winner. She then added a pair of assists in a 5-3 victory to sweep the series at McConnell Arena.
