MONTREAL –
Clement Secchi, a native of Aix-en-Provence in France, and
Andreanne Tremblay of Longueuil, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week, for the period ending Feb. 3, 2019.
Secchi, a rookie on the men's swim team, broke two school records and racked up three gold medals along with three silvers, as McGill finished second at the RSEQ championships over the weekend. The 18-year-old management freshman won the 50-metre backstroke in 25.44 seconds and claimed the 200 backstroke in a record time of 1:58.26. He smashed the 26-year old McGill standard of 1:59.23, set by
Paul Watson in 1992. A 5-foot-10, 140-pound sprinter, Secchi was part of the winning 4x50m medley relay (1:41.13) in addition to his silver medal swim in the 100 back (53.92), which surpassed the school record of 54.66 set last fall. Secchi also placed second in the 50 butterfly (24.54) and helped the 4x100 medley relay finish second (3:43.17).
Tremblay, a 5-foot-10 setter with the women's volleyball squad, registered 27 assists and 17 digs, leading sixth-ranked McGill to a key 3-1 victory over the No.8 Montreal Carabins on Sunday. It was their first road win over the Carabins in four years and improved the team’s record to 14-3 atop the RSEQ league standings. The 21-year-old occupational therapy major also added four kills, three aces and three stuff blocks.
