Claire Vercheval of Ste. Julie, Que., and
Avery Cadogan of Winnipeg, Man., are the McGill University athletes of the week, for the period ending Jan. 27, 2019.
Vercheval, a 6-foot-1 power-hitter with the volleyball Martlets, scored a team-leading 39.5 points in a pair of victories over Sherbrooke (3-0) and Ottawa (3-1) over the weekend. The wins improved the seventh-ranked Martlets record to 13-3 as they maintained sole possession of first place in the RSEQ conference.
The 22-year old physical education junior registered 33 kills, four service aces and 2.5 stuff blocks in seven sets. She also collected 14 digs and one assist. A product of College Edouard Montpetit, Vercheval is a Quebec Foundation recruitment bursary holder who enrolled at McGill in 2016.
Cadogan, a 6-foot-4 guard with the basketball Redmen, became the first player in team history to play back-to-back complete 40-minute games on the same weekend as McGill came from behind late in each, to sweep Bishop’s, 84-80 in Montreal (Jan. 24) and 66-58 in Lennoxville (Jan. 26).
The 24-year-old economics senior registered a combined 24 points and 18 rebounds, in addition to five steals, four blocked shots and four assists. Cadogan shot 33.3 per cent from the field (7/21), including a 5-for-16 performance from three-point range. He also shot a perfect 5-for-5 from the free-throw line.
