MONTREAL –
Louis-Philip Guindon of St. Joseph du Lac, Que., and
Claire Vercheval of Ste. Julie, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week, for the period ending Jan. 20, 2019.
Guindon, a 6-foot-1, 188-pound goaltender with the hockey Redmen, made 65 saves and registered back-to-back shutouts as McGill blanked both Laurentian and UOIT last week. The two victories moved McGill into second place in the OUA East with a 14-5-4 record. Guindon, a 23-year-old science junior, turned aside 30 shots in a 2-0 home-ice win over Laurentian last Friday, then kicked aside 35 shots in a 3-0 road victory against UOIT in Oshawa on Sunday. He improved to 14-8 on the season and currently ranks first among league netminders in wins and shutouts (3), fifth in goals-against average (2.24) and eighth in save percentage (.921). Guindon now has a career record of 58-27 with eight shutouts in 88 contests overall.
Vercheval, a 6-foot-1 power-hitter with the volleyball Martlets, scored a team-leading 27.5 points in a pair of key 3-1 victories over ninth-ranked Montreal and No. 10 Laval over the weekend. It marked the first time in school history that the Martlets had beaten both the Rouge et Or and Carabins in consecutive games. The wins improved the seventh-ranked Martlets record to 11-3 as they took over sole possession of first place in the RSEQ conference. The 22-year old physical education junior registered 20 kills, six service aces and 1.5 stuff blocks in eight sets. She also collected 14 digs and three assists. A product of College Edouard Montpetit, she is a Quebec Foundation recruitment bursary holder who enrolled at McGill in 2016.
