Liam MacDonald of North Vancouver, B.C., and
Rebecca Gillis of Dollard des Ormeaux, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending Nov. 12, 2018.
MacDonald, a six-foot, 175-pound midfielder with the lacrosse Redmen, registered back-to-back hat-tricks at the Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association national championship tournament in Toronto over the weekend. The 20-year-old management junior scored three goals and was named player of the game in an 11-6 quarter-final victory over Toronto last Friday, then added three more markers in a 10-6 semifinal loss to Western on Saturday. A product of Windsor high school in Vancouver, MacDonald enrolled at McGill in 2016.
Gillis, a 5-foot-6 sprinter and captain of the Martlets swim team, won gold, silver and bronze medals on Saturday, leading McGill to a second-place finish at the third Quebec Cup meet of the season, held in Ottawa.The 23-year-old psychology senior won the 100-metre backstroke, qualifying for Nationals with a personal best time of one minute, 3.40 seconds, winning by a body length. She finished second in the 50 backstroke with a personal best of 30.18 seconds and was third in the 4x200 freestyle relay (8:34.23).
