MONTREAL --
Samuel Wang of Sherbrooke, Que., and
Tricia Deguire of Sherbrooke, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending Oct. 29, 2018.
Wang, a 5-foot-10, 153-pound sprinter with the Redmen swim team, tallied a meet-high four-medal performance, with two golds and a pair of silvers, as McGill rallied to capture the Quebec Cup meet in their own pool, Saturday. The 22-year biochemistry junior reached the podium in 25 per cent of the 16 races held. He won the 50-metre freestyle (0:23.55) and guided the winning 4x100 medley relay (3:43.64). The 5-foot-10, 153-pound sprinter was also second in the 100 butterfly, registering a Nationals qualifying time of 55.26 seconds. Wang also helped the 4x100 freestyle relay to place second in 3:25.58.
Deguire, a 5-foot-8 goaltender with the Martlets hockey team, stopped 61 of 62 shots for a stingy .984 save percentage and a superb 0.50 goals-against average as McGill swept a pair of key road games last week. They won 3-1 at Ottawa on Friday and blanked No.1 ranked Concordia 3-0 on Sunday. A 21-year-old science junior majoring in kinesiology, Deguire saved 35 of 36 shots against the Ravens, then kicked out all 26 shots to shutout the Stingers. A product of Champlain College in Lennoxville, Que., Deguire has played for the Canadian national development team in each of her first two years at McGill.
