MONTREAL – Elizabeth Hirsch of Melrose, Mass., and Clement Secchi, a native of Aix-en-Provence in France, are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending Oct. 14, 2018.

Hirsch, a member of the cross-country Martlets, struck gold Saturday in the nation's capital, leading McGill to a near-perfect score at the Jim Howe Memorial race. It was the first victory of the season for Hirsch, a 20-year-old biology junior who finished first of 109 women, completing the six-kilometre course in 22 minutes, 22 seconds. The winning time was a 90-second improvement from her 6k race in Sherbrooke two weeks ago. The 5-foot-7 distance runner dominated the field, finishing four seconds ahead of the second-place runner.

Secchi, an 18-year-old management freshman, led the Redmen swim team to a second-place finish with three gold medals in his collegiate debut at the first RSEQ conference meet of the season, in Sherbrooke, last Friday. Secchi, a 5-foot-10, 140-pound sprinter, placed first in the 50m backstroke (25.22) and the 100 back (54.44), qualifying for national championships in both. He also captured a relay gold in the 4x50 individual medley (1:41.18).
