MONTREAL - Brianna Miller of Pte. Claire, Que., and Richie Klares of Warrenton, Virginia, are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub & Grill, for the period ending Sept. 9, 2012.
Miller, a 5-foot-5 fly-half on the women's rugby team, amassed 31 points as visiting McGill opened regular season play in the RSEQ women's university rugby conference by crushing Carleton 71-5, Sunday. The 21-year-old physical and health education junior tallied three tries and eight conversions. Before enrolling at McGill in 2010, she played for John Abbott College.
Klares, a 5-foot-9 attacker on the men's lacrosse club, scored four goals in two victories as the Redmen opened regular season play with a pair of come-from-behind road decisions over Trent and Queen's last weekend. The 17-year-old science freshman netted a hat-trick, including the game-winner with 2:25 remaining as McGill rallied from a three-goal deficit to edge Trent 10-9 at Kingston, Ont., Saturday. Klares sparked the rally with a goal just 35 seconds into the second half, then scoring at 10:33 of the final quarter, narrowing the gap to 9-8 and struck for his third marker seven minutes later to break a 9-9 tie. He also tallied once in a 13-10 win at Queen's on Sunday. He is a product of Kettle Run high school in Virginia.
Both athletes will receive a gift certificate from Ye Olde Orchard Pub.
