MONTREAL --
Claire Vercheval of Ste. Julie, Que., and
Jerome Verrier from Drummondville, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Nov. 12, 2017.
Vercheval, a 6-foot-1 power-hitter with the volleyball Martlets, scored a team-leading 29.5 points in a pair of victories last week. The 21-year old physical education sophomore registered 26 kills in only seven sets. She also tallied 23 digs, three service aces, one assisted stuff block and a pair of assists as McGill swept Ottawa 3-0 at home last Friday and then came away with a 3-1 road victory at Sherbrooke on Sunday. A product of College Edouard Montpetit, she enrolled at McGill in 2016.
Verrier, a six-foot, 196-pound forward with the hockey Redmen, earned points on five of McGill's 12 goals in a pair of road victories last week, assisting on the game-winner in both contests. The 23-year-old economics junior tallied once and added a pair of assists in an 8-3 victory at Laurentian University in Sudbury last Friday, then collected two assists in a 4-1 triumph over Nipissing in North Bay, Ont., on Saturday. Verrier, who played for Drummondville and Quebec in the QMJHL, has had NHL tryouts with Winnipeg (2014) and Detroit (2015). He currently sits third in the OUA scoring race with 17 points in 12 games, including a league-leading 14 assists.
