MONTREAL --
Samuel Wang, from Sherbrooke, Que., and
Natasha Tcheki-Jamgotchian of Pierrefonds, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Oct. 29, 2017.
Wang, a 5-foot-10, 153-pound sprinter on the Redmen swim team, struck gold four times and was named male swimmer of the meet at the second RSEQ Quebec Cup competition of the season, won by McGill at their own pool last Saturday. The 21-year biochemistry sophomore won both the 50-metre freestyle (23.23 seconds) and 100 butterfly (55.38). He also swam on both winning relays, the 4x100 medley (3:46.14) and the 4x100 freestyle (3:25.20), which gave McGill135.5 points, good enough for a narrow one-point victory over the Montreal Carabins on the men's side in the meet standings.
Tcheki-Jamgotchian, a 5-foot-4 defender with the soccer Martlets, scored a pair of goals in two must-win games that led McGill to a playoff spot last week. The 21-year old kinesiology major netted the winning tally -- on a penalty-kick -- in the 89th minute of a 3-2 victory against Concordia last Friday. A first-year transfer from the NCAA's Syracuse University, she also scored the opening goal in Sunday's 2-1 road win at UQAM.
McGill athletes of the week receive a gift certificate from Ye Olde Orchard Pub.
