MONTREAL –
Alex Kiss-Rusk of Beaconsfield, Que., and
Sasha Lagarde of Pierrefonds, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Oct. 22, 2017.
Kiss-Rusk, a 6-foot-4 centre with the basketball Martlets, was named tournament MVP after guiding McGill to a three-game sweep at the Redbird Classic. The Martlets defeated St. Francis Xavier 69-41, Toronto 78-58 and Queen's 78-57 to win their own tourney for the fifth consecutive year. Kiss-Rusk, a 23-year-old psychology senior, led all tournament scorers and rebounders with a whopping 59 points and 26 rebounds over the weekend. She added six steals, five assists and four blocks.
She shot a stellar 55 per cent from the floor (27-for-49) and drained five of eight free-throws.
Lagarde, a six-foot, 220-pound centerfielder, was named as the tournament's most outstanding hitter and most valuable player as the McGill Redmen won all five games to complete an unblemished 25-0 season record (and a 28-game win streak dating back to last year) to capture their fourth consecutive national championship in Fredericton, N.B., over the weekend. He led all hitters with a .526 batting average, collecting 10 hits in 19 at bats. The 26-year-old education sophomore scored seven runs and had nine runs batted in over the five games. He smacked a tourney-leading three home runs, including a grand slam and a solo shot in Saturday's semifinal victory over Acadia. McGill opened with an 8-6 win over Concordia (Oct. 19), followed by victories over Acadia (15-0 & 13-2), UNB (8-6) and Carleton (10-1).
