MONTREAL --
Samuel Wang, from Sherbrooke, Que., and
Meggie Dargis of Trois-Rivières, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Oct. 15, 2017.
Wang, a 5-foot-10, 153-pound sprinter, struck gold four times and was named male swimmer of the meet at the first RSEQ Quebec Cup competition of the season, held in Quebec City last Saturday. He won two backstrokes, taking the 50-metre race in 25.90 seconds and the 100m in 55.58 seconds. Both times were good enough to qualify for Nationals. The 21-year biochemistry sophomore also struck gold and surpassed the U SPORTS qualifying standard in the 50m butterfly (24.20) and helped the 4x50m medley relay finish atop the podium in 1:43.03, which broke the school record of 1:43.07 set at the 2015 RSEQ championships.
Dargis, a 5-foot-2 distance runner with the Martlets cross-country team, led McGill to a first-place finish among six teams at the Jim Howe Memorial Race hosted by Carleton last Saturday in Ottawa. The 21-year-old finance junior completed the six-kilometre course in 21 minutes, 57.9 seconds to finish first of 110 runners and winning the race by 38 seconds.
