Meggie Dargis of Trois-Rivières, Que., and
Troy Shepherd from Boston, Mass., are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Sept. 17, 2017.
Dargis, a 5-foot-2 distance runner with the Martlets cross-country team, led McGill to a first-place finish among 22 teams at the McGill Open last Saturday atop Mt. Royal Park. The 21-year-old finance junior finished atop the podium in the 281-runner field. She completed the four-kilometre race in 14 minutes, 40 seconds, a full 23 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor.
Shepherd, a 5-foot-10, 170-pound shortstop with the baseball Redmen, posted a .500 batting average, scored eight runs and collected a team-leading eight RBIs as McGill opened defence of their national championship by winning all six of their games last week. The 19-year-old Arts freshman had 11 hits in 22 at bats with one double and a triple. He also drew one walk and was hit by a pitch to register a stellar .542 on-base percentage. He was successful on three of four stolen base attempts. In the field, he had nine assists, made seven put-outs and turned two double-plays.
