Ogundokun and Downie-Landry named McGill athletes of the week
MONTREAL –
Dele Ogundokun of Hamilton, Ont., and
Jade Downie-Landry, from St. Jean sur Richelieu, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Jan. 15, 2017.
Ogundokun, a 6-foot-2, 222-pound guard with the ninth-ranked basketball Redmen, scored 32 points and grabbed a dozen rebounds as McGill swept back-to-back games over UQAM, defeating the Citadins 90-59 last Friday and 71-49 on Saturday. The 22-year-old management senior was also credited with six steals and 10 assists. He shot 60 per cent from the field (12-for-20), made an impressive 57.1 per cent from three-point range (8-for-14) and went 0-for-1 from the free-throw line. He joined the Redmen in 2013 out of Westmount Secondary School in Hamilton.
Downie-Landry, a 5-foot-9 forward with the hockey Martlets, assisted on both goals, as fifth-ranked McGill rallied to defeat No.10 Ottawa 2-1 on Sunday. The victory gave division-leading McGill a three-point lead over second-place Ottawa in the RSEQ standings. It was the first game back for Downie-Landry, who had missed five contests while playing for the Canadian national development squad, which settled for silver at the Nations Cup tournament in Fussen, Germany. The 21-year-old psychology freshman set up the tying goal at 19:30 of the first period and added a helper on the winning tally at 3:03 of the third. She is a product of Dawson College.
