Alex Kiss-Rusk of Beaconsfield, Que., and
Jenning Leung, a native of Los Banos, in The Philippines, are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Mar. 12, 2017.
Kiss-Rusk, a 6-foot-4 centre, was named to the U SPORTS final Eight women’s tournament MVP in Victoria, B.C., after guiding fourth-seeded McGill to their first-ever national championship, and the first one for the RSEQ conference in 33 years. The Martlets defeated Regina 72-62, Carleton 66-60 and Laval 66-55. Kiss-Rusk, a 23-year-old psychology senior, was named as McGill’s player of the game three times and registered a dominating performance highlighted by three consecutive double-doubles. Over the three games, she tallied a tourney-leading 51 points and 44 rebounds with 14 assists, six blocked shots and one steal. She played 113 of 120 possible minutes, shot 40 per cent from the floor (18-for-45) and 75 per cent from the line (15-for-20). In the gold medal contest, she scored a game-high 15 points and led all players with 20 rebounds.
Leung, a 6-foot, 177-pound point-guard, led McGill to a fourth-place finish at the U SPORTS Final Eight men’s championship, matching their best finish since 1977. The third-seeded Redmen defeated Manitoba 63-53 before losing 74-58 to Carleton and 69-63 to Dalhousie. Leung, a 21-year-old psychology senior, was named as McGill's player of the game twice and made the all-tournament team. Over the three games, he scored 43 points and seven rebounds while averaging 31.7 minutes per game with four assists, one block and two steals. He shot 43.8 per cent from the field (14/32), 44.0 from beyond the arc (11/25) and was 4-for-8 from the foul-line.
