Samuel Wang of Sherbrooke, Que., and
Ketsia Croteau from L'Acadie, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Jan. 29, 2017.
Wang, a 20-year-old biochemistry freshman with the Redmen swim team, led McGill to finish first of six teams at the Coupe de Quebec meet in Trois-Rivieres, Saturday. He was McGill's highest scoring individual with 482.5 points on the FINA scale, which ranked third of all swimmers at the meet. He posted three silver-medal performances and a fourth-place finish. Wang, who measures 5-foot-9 and 152 pounds, was second in the 50m freestyle (23.60 seconds), second in the 100m butterfly (55.47) and guided the 4x100 medley relay to a second-place result, where he swan leadoff in a race that was clocked in 3:48.40. he also anchored the 4x100 freestyle, which finished in 3:30.08.. He joined McGill this fall out of Collège de Sherbrooke
Croteau, a 19-year-old member of the lumberjack team, finished first in three events and was second in two others as the Martlets scored 1170.03 points to win the 57th annual McGill intercollegiate woodsmen competition Saturday at McGill's Macdonald campus in Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue. The third-year farm management and technology major won the pole climb with a time of 6.09 seconds, as well as the quarter-split (with partner Elianne Wubbolts) and the Swede Saw (with teammates Julie Macfarlane, Joseanne Naud, Eliane Wubbolts, Jessica Rouleau and Danielle Duquette. Croteau finished second in the cross-cut and the log deck (both team events).
