MONTREAL –
Vanisa Ezukuse of Mississauga, Ont., and
Mathieu Pompei from Laval, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Dec. 4, 2016.
Ezukuse, a 5-foot-10 throws specialist with the women’s track and field team, broke a McGill record -- for the second straight week -- in the Laval Rouge et Or Invitational meet at Centre PEPS in Quebec City last Saturday, leading the Martlets to finish second of six teams. The 21-year-old science senior, who majors in nursing, finished third in the weight throw with a distance of 15.46 metres, easily surpassing the school record of 15.16 that she set at McGill’s Tomlinson Fieldhouse on Nov. 26, 2016. She also placed third in the shotput with a toss of 10.52m. Ezukuse joined the McGill program in 2013 out of St. Marcellinus secondary school in Mississauga.
Pompei, a 5-foot-7, 166-pound centre with the hockey Redmen, scored three points, including a game-winning goal, as sixth-ranked McGill split a pair of home game last week, losing 1-0 in overtime to No.4 Ryerson and rebounding with a 6-1 win over Toronto. After being blanked in the first game on Friday, the 25-year-old social work senior was involved on half of McGill’s offensive output against the Varsity Blues on Saturday. He tallied twice and set up another to take over the OUA scoring race with a 9-20-29 record in just 17 games.
