MONTREAL -- Mélanie Myrand, a distance runner from Lachine, Que., and football player Frédéric Paquette-Perrault a native Montrealer, are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Oct. 16, 2016.
Myrand, a 5-foot-3 senior with the cross-country Martlets, won gold and guided McGill to a first-place finish of 14 schools at the annual RSEQ-AUS interlocking cross-country meet, hosted by UNB at Odell Park in Fredericton last Saturday. The 5-foot-3 senior completed the six-kilometre circuit in 21 minutes, 27.72 seconds to lead the 143-athlete field. She finished nine seconds ahead of her closest competitor. Myrand, a 30-year-old graduate student in nursing, was voted RSEQ conference athlete of the year last season. A product of John Abbott College, she previously graduated from McGill in 2010 with a science degree but returned last year to further her education with a master's degree.

Paquette-Perrault, a 20-year-old rookie quarterback, passed for 465 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another TD as visiting McGill defeated Bishop's 37-14 last Friday at Coulter Field. The 6-foot-2, 212-pound accounting freshman picked apart the Gaiters defence, completing 37 of 48 pass attempts with no interceptions. It marked the seventh-best single-game completion total in Quebec university history and was four shy of the conference record of 41.

McGill athletes of the week receive a gift certificate from Ye Olde Orchard Pub.
