MONTREAL – Swimmer
Isabel Sarty of Halifax, N.S., and lacrosse player
Cameron McGinnis of Scarborough, Ont., are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending Oct. 30, 2022.
Sarty, a 5-foot-7 sprinter, won three gold medals and was named female swimmer of the meet as McGill finished first of six schools to capture the women's division in the RSEQ’s second Quebec Cup swim meet of the season at the University’s Memorial Pool on Saturday. The 23-year-old master's student in neuroscience won the 200-metre freestyle in two minutes, 2.94 seconds, to qualify for the U SPORTS national championship. She also qualified in the 50 free with her winning time of 25.89 seconds and guided the 4x100 free relay to victory in 3:50.80, which also met the qualifying standard for Nationals. A second-year transfer from Dalhousie University where she earned a science degree and was a national Top 8 Academic All-Canadian in 2021, Sarty was twice named the AUS conference swimmer of the year, in both 2019 and 2020.
McGinnis, a six-foot, 203-pound attacker, scored a school record eight goals while leading McGill to a masterful 14-6 come-from-behind victory over Queen's in a Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association sudden-death, wildcard playoff game at Kingston on Friday. The 21-year-old science senior is majoring in kinesiology. He broke the single-game McGill mark of seven goals set by
Anders Bjella on Nov. 8, 2015. A product of Birchmont Park Collegiate Institute, McGinnis scored once in the first quarter, potted two more in the second to even the score at 5-5, then exploded for four goals in the third to put McGill ahead 11-6. He added his eighth marker to open the scoring in the final quarter.
