MONTREAL -- Swimmers
Kade Wist of Calgary, Alta., and
Farah Hafazalla of Newmarket, Ont., are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Oct. 9, 2016.
Wist, an 18-year-old economics sophomore on the men's swim team, led the Redmen to finish first of six teams at the RSEQ conference's first Quebec Cup meet in Sherbrooke, Saturday. It was the first major meet victory by the McGill men since Jan. 21, 2012. The 5-foot-11, 175-pound butterfly specialist captured a gold medal and a pair of silvers. He won the 200-metre butterfly in two minutes, 5.33 seconds, while helping the 4x50 and 4x200 freestyle relays both finish second.
Hafazalla, an 18-year-old science freshman from Newmarket, Ont., led the McGill women to finish second of six teams at the aforementioned Quebec Cup meet. The 5-foot-7 breaststroker won the 200m breaststroke with a CIS qualifying time of 2:35.89, almost two seconds faster than her closest competitor. She also finished 12th in the 200 butterfly (2:35.21) and helped the 4x50 freestyle relay and the 4x50 medley relay finish place sixth (1:52.92) and fifth (2:04.63), respectively.
