MONTREAL --
Melanie Myrand of Lachine, Que., and
Dele Ogundokun of Hamilton, Ont., are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Oct. 2, 2016.
Myrand, a 5-foot-3 senior with the cross-country Martlets, won gold and led McGill to a first-place finish of 11 schools at the Laval Rouge et Or Invitational meet, on the Plains of Abraham, Saturday. The 5-foot-3 senior ran the six-kilometre course in 21 minutes, 51.6 seconds, finishing 11 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor to lead the 111-runner field. Myrand, a 30-year-old graduate student in nursing, was voted RSEQ conference athlete of the year last season. A product of John Abbott College, she previously graduated from McGill in 2010 with a science degree but returned last year to further her education.
Ogundokun, a 6-foot-2, 222-pound guard with the basketball Redmen, scored 47 points and grabbed 20 rebounds in three games at the Guy Vetrie Memorial Tournament in Victoria, B.C., over the weekend. The 22-year-old management senior was also credited with seven steals and two assists. He shot 54.8 per cent from the field (17-for-31), made an impressive 56.3 per cent from three-point range (9-for-16) and went 4-for-6 from the free-throw line.
