MONTREAL – Basketball players
Alex Kiss-Rusk of Beaconsfield, Que., and
Vincent Dufort of Smiths Falls, Ont., are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Mar. 13, 2016.
Kiss-Russ, a 21-year-old geography senior with the conference champion Martlets, scored 44 points and pulled down 22 rebounds. Kiss-Rusk, a 6-foot-4 centre from Beaconsfield, Que., tallied a combined 42 points and 22 rebounds, 10 blocked shots, six assists and a pair of steals as McGill swept Concordia 85-60 and Laval 71-56 at the RSEQ Final Four championship last weekend. The 22-year-old psychology junior shot a sparkling 58.8 per cent from the floor (20/34) and was perfect on her four free-throws. In Thursday's semifinal win over Concordia, she scored a career-high 31 points and pulled down seven rebounds with eight blocks. Two days later, she registered a rare reverse "double-double" with 13 points and 15 rebounds as McGill captured their fifth consecutive conference banner.
Dufort, a physical education senior helped the Redmen win the RSEQ Final Four championship with victories over Laval (76-69) and UQAM (78-67) last week. The 6-foot-4, 197-pound shooting guide scored a combined 35 points with 14 rebounds, with 10 assists, one blocked shot and three steals. He shot 57.1 per cent from the floor (12/21), made one of two three-pointers and went 7-for-10 from the free-throw line. The fifth-year veteran, who celebrates his 24th birthday on March 16, saved his best for the final home game of his brilliant career with 21 points and eight rebounds in the gold medal game.
