MONTREAL –
Helena Reinfels of Puslinch, Ont., and
Ryan McClelland of Toronto, are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Feb. 28, 2016.
Reinfels, a 21-year-old geography senior with the women's track and field team, won three gold medals and one bronze to capture athlete-of-the-meet and athlete-of-the-year honours, at the RSEQ indoor championships hosted by McGill last weekend. She won the women's 300m in a school record time of 39.48 seconds, erasing her own mark of 39.83 set in a home meet two weeks ago. She also finished first in the 60m hurdles (9.01 seconds) and guided the 4x200m relay squad to victory with a McGill record time of 1:41.25, breaking the previous mark of 1:41.95 set earlier this month at the Armory meet in New York City. Reinfels, a 5-foot-9 multi-event specialist who also helped the 4x400 relay to a third-place finish, has now broken five school records over the past two months. A product of Centennial Collegiate Vocational Institute, she enrolled at McGill in 2012.
McClelland, a 19-year-old civil engineering sophomore with the men's track team, helped the relay squad break both Quebec and McGill records while winning four medals at the RSEQ championships last week. The 5-foot-11, 150-pound middle distance specialist guided the 4x200 and 4x400 relays to gold medals in 1:28.45 and 3:14.98, respectively. The latter time erased the previous RSEQ record (3:16.11) as well as the school record (3:17.83). McClelland also won silver in the 300m (34.56) and bronze in the 600m (1:20.65). He attended St. Michael's College School before joining the Redmen in 2014.
