MONTREAL – Swimmers
Simone Cseplo of Toronto and
Kade Wist of Calgary are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Feb. 7, 2016.
Cseplo, a 20-year-old International Development Studies major, broke two school records and captured three gold medals and one silver at the RSEQ championship meet in Trois-Rivieres over the weekend. The six-foot junior showed her versatility in winning the women's 50m backstroke (29.10), the 200 freestyle (2:00.97) and guiding the 4x100 freestyle relay to victory (3:52.38).
Her time in the 200 free eclipsed the McGill record of 2:00.99 set by
Katie Caldwell in 2013. Cseplo also helped the 4x50 freestyle relay finish second with a McGill record time of 1:45.41, breaking the 2003 mark of 1:46.63. Prior to enrolling at McGill in 2013, she attended the Premiere School for Elite Athletes in Toronto.
Wist, a 17-year-old arts freshman, won a pair of gold medals as the Redmen swim team finished third at the RSEQ swim championships. The 5-foot-11, 160-pound butterfly specialist won both the 200m fly (2:02.78) and the 100m fly (56.71). In the latter race, he came back from fifth place at the 75m mark to win over the last 25m. Wist, a product of Western high school in Calgary, is the son of Canadian Olympian and McGill Sports Hall of Fame inductee
Andrea Nugent.
