MONTREAL –
Helena Reinfels of Puslinch, Ont., and
Vincent Parent-Pichette of Verdun, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Jan. 31, 2016.
Reinfels guided the Martlets track and field team to finish third of 16 schools by winning gold and silver medals while establishing school and meet records at the McGill Team Challenge, held at Richard Tomlinson Fieldhouse last weekend. The 5-foot-10 senior scored 3,777 points in the women's pentathlon to erase the previous meet standard of 3,767 set in 2008. Her score also shattered the McGill record of 3,515 held since 2013. She qualified for the CIS championship in the pentathlon, which includes a 60m sprint, as well as the 60m hurdles, high jump, long jump and shot put. A 21-year-old geography major, Reinfels also finished second in the 300m, completing the race in 40:36.
Parent-Pichette helped the Redmen track squad finish fourth overall by anchoring the gold medal winning 4x800 relay and posting a fourth-place finish in the men's 1000m where he broke a 19-year-old school record. A 24-year-old physical education senior, he crossed the finish line in 2:25.51, erasing the previous 1000m McGill standard of 2:26.05 set in 1997. The 5-foot-10, 155-pound middle distance specialist also helped the relay quartet come from behind to victory, crossing the finish line in 7:43.05, just shy of the school record of 7:41.90.
