MONTREAL –
Alex Kiss-Rusk of Beaconsfield, Que., and
Alan Shekhtman of Newton, Mass., are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Jan. 17, 2015.
Kiss-Rusk, a 6-foot-4 centre with the basketball Martlets, scored a combined 42 points and pulled down 19 rebounds in two victories last weekend. She tallied 20 points in 74-52 win over visiting Laval last Thursday and added 22 more in a 50-47 conquest over the Rouge et Or in Quebec City, Saturday. The 22-year-old psychology junior shot a stellar 73.9 per cent from the floor (17-for-23) and 75.0 per cent from the foul-line (8-for-12). She added three steals, two blocked shots and a pair of assists. A daughter of McGill basketball all-stars Annette Kiss and Rick Rusk, she is a product of Phillips Academy who merited an NCAA scholarship at Virginia Tech before transferring to McGill for her sophomore season.
Shekhtman, a 5-foot-8, 150-pounder on the Redmen badminton team, won all three of his singles matches and was also victorious in doubles as McGill won two of five events at a mixed team competition in Sherbrooke last Saturday. The 19-year-old management sophomore defeated his opponents from UQAM (21-12, 21-13), Laval (21-23, 21-17, 21-13) and Montreal (21-12, 21-12), then teamed up with
Elian Zhang to win men's doubles against Sherbrooke (21-12, 21-12).
