MONTREAL --
Jean-Daniel Vallieres of Longueuil, Que., and Montreal native
Catherine Amyot are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Nov. 22, 2015.
Vallieres, a 20-year-old civil engineering freshman, won three gold medals and a silver to help the Redmen swim team finish first of seven universities at the Kemp-Fry Invitational, a two-day meet held in Halifax over the weekend. The six-foot, 170-pound middle distance specialist established three personal bests and qualified for the CIS championships in the 200-metre individual medley (2:02.91), the 400 IM (4:23.22) and the 200 breaststroke (2:17.56). He was second in the 100 butterfly (56.26). Vallieres is a product of College Edouard-Montpetit.
Amyot, a 5-foot-10 power-hitter with the volleyball Martlets, scored 44 points in 11 sets as McGill was the only Quebec school to go undefeated at the AUS-RSEQ interlocking tournament in Halifax last week. The Martlets swept Saint Mary's (3-0), Dalhousie (3-1) and Acadia (3-1), moving into sole possession of first place in the RSEQ conference with a 10-2 record. The 21-year-old materials engineering senior racked up 38 kills, five aces and one stuff block, to go along with 44 digs and four assists. Prior to enrolling at McGill, she graduated from École secondaire publique Louis-Riel in Ottawa.
