MONTREAL --
Jessica Porfilio of Longueuil, Que., and
Christian McCue of Hampden, Maine, are the University's athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Oct. 28, 2012.
Porfilio, a 5-foot-2 distance runner, helped the Martlets capture the RSEQ provincial cross-country championship meet on the Plains of Abraham, Saturday. A product of Champlain College in St. Lambert, Que., the 20-year-old nursing sophomore finished first of 56 entries. She completed the five-kilometre course in 18 minutes, 49 seconds, edging out her nearest rival by an eight-second margin. Porfilio joined the Martlets last fall after graduating from Champlain College in St. Lambert.
McCue, a 19-year-old arts freshman who plays for the basketball Redmen, was named tournament MVP and led the Redmen to three come-from-behind victories at the RBC Brock Classic last week, extending the team's win streak to eight consecutive games. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound guard scored 56 points with eight rebounds, six assists and six steals. He shot 46.5 per cent from the floor (20/43), went 5-for-26 from three-point range and made all six attempts from the free-throw line. He scored a career-high 23 points in an 81-68 win over Queen's on Friday, then added 15 more in a 69-66 decision over Brock on Saturday, sinking a pair of free-throws with 5.1 seconds remaining to give McGill their only lead of the game. On Sunday, McCue poured in 18 points in an 85-69 win over Regina. He enrolled at McGill this fall after graduating from Hampden Academy.
Each athlete will receive a gift certificate from Ye Olde Orchard Pub.
