MONTREAL –
Karl Forgues from Repentigny, Que., and
Mariam Sylla, a native of Conakry, Guinea, are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Sept. 6, 2015.
Forgues, a linebacker with the football Redmen, was in on 15 tackles as defence dominated when McGill defeated visiting Bishop's 10-3 in their RSEQ conference opener last Friday. The 5-foot-9, 188-pound sophomore registered eight solos and seven assisted tackles for a net total of 11.5, including a pair of quarterback sacks. A 21-year-old physical education major, Forgues was also credited with one forced fumble and a knockdown. Forgues joined the Redmen last year out of Collège de Lanaudière and was voted as the RSEQ university football defensive rookie of the year.
Sylla, a 6-foot-1 forward with the basketball Martlets, tallied 46 points and grabbed 27 rebounds during a three-game tour of Greece last week. The 23-year-old pharmacology senior registered a pair of "double-doubles", including a 17-point, 14-rebound performance in a 74-49 victory over Paleo Faliro, a Div. 2 professional club, on Sept. 6. She also poured in 17 points with eight rebounds in a 61-51 loss to Olympico, an elite Div. 1 squad, on Sept.5. Sylla, a co-captain with the Martlets and a three-time member of the Principal's Student-athlete Honour Roll, started off the overseas trip with a 12-point, 5-rebound effort in a 62-61 loss against Kronos, another Div. 2 team. Prior to enrolling at McGill, Sylla starred in the Quebec CEGEP league for College Montmorency.
