MONTREAL –
Dylan Golow of Barrie, Ont., and
Mariam Sylla, a native of Conakry, Guinea, are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Jan. 11, 2015.
Golow, a pentathlete with the Redmen track and field team, won gold and just missed a school record in the pentathlon as the McGill finished first of six teams at the Sherbrooke Invitational last Saturday. It was the first meet victory for the Redmen since taking the Sherbrooke event in 2011.
Golow, a 21-year-old senior majoring in neuroscience, amassed 3,534 points, just shy of his previous personal best of 3,571 set at the RSEQ championship meet on Feb. 23, 2014, Golow, who measures 5-foot-11 and 165 pounds, collected 788 of his points in the 60-metre hurdles (8.81 seconds), added 772 in the 1000m (2:49.34), 709 in the long jump (6.55m), 670 in the high jump (1.85m) and 595 in the shot put (11.81m).
Sylla, a 6-foot-1 forward with the No.3-ranked basketball Martlets, registered back-to-back "double-doubles" as McGill swept a home-and-home series against Bishop's last week. The Martlets defeated the Gaiters 85-30 (Jan. 8) and 67-50 (Jan. 10), extending their unblemished record to 6-0 atop the RSEQ conference. The 22-year-old pharmacology junior scored a combined 22 points and grabbed 23 rebounds in only 37 minutes of court time, which was about half her usual minutes due to lopsided nature of the score in both games. Sylla shot 38.1 per cent from the field (8/21) and made six of seven shots from the free-throw line. She was also credited with a pair of steals, one blocked shot and two assists. Prior to enrolling at McGill, Sylla starred in the Quebec CEGEP league for College Montmorency.
Both athletes will receive a gift certificate from Ye Olde Orchard Pub.
