MONTREAL – Swimmers
Emilia Mastromatteo of Kenora, Ont., and
Loic Courville-Fortin of Repentigny, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week, presented by
Restaurant Poulet Rouge, for the period ending Oct. 13, 2024.
Mastromatteo, a 20-year-old science junior majoring in anatomy and cellular biology, won four gold medals, broke a school record and was named female swimmer of the meet at Memorial Pool, last Friday. The 5-foot-6 sprinter broke the school record in the 50-metre butterfly, where she was clocked in 27.15 seconds to erase the team's previous mark of 27.37 set in 2021. The other races won by Mastromatteo include the 50 butterfly (28.92), the 50 backstroke (28.92) and the 100 back (1:01.99). Each of her four victories met the qualifying standards for the U SPORTS national championships next spring. A product of St Thomas Aquinas School in Kenora, she enrolled at McGill in 2022.
Courville-Fortin, a 20-year-old science freshman who is majoring in biochemistry, also won four gold medals and was named male swimmer of the meet as the Redbirds finished first of six university teams at the RSEQ's University Cup 1 meet at the McGill pool last Friday. The short-and middle-distance sprinter finished atop the podium in the 200-metre individual medley (2:02.44), the 50 backstroke (25:33), the 100 back (64.73) and he swam leadoff on the winning 4x50m medley relay (1:49.90). He reached the qualification standard for Nationals in each event. Prior to enrolling at McGill this fall, he attended Collège Ahuntsic.
