MONTREAL –
Sophie Courville of Montreal and
Zach Bye from Greenwich, Conn., are the McGill University athletes of the week, presented by
Restaurant Poulet Rouge, for the period ending Sept. 29, 2024.
Courville, a 5-foot-7 distance runner from Montreal, helped the McGill Martlets cross-country squad finish first of seven universities, nine points ahead of second-place Laval, at the 10th annual Capital Challenge meet in Ottawa last Saturday. A 21-year-old science junior who is majoring in physiology, she finished first of 89 women to capture her first-ever race victory at the university level. Courville completed the six-kilometre course in 22 minutes, 32 seconds, which was five seconds ahead of the next closest runner. A product of Collège de Maisonneuve, she enrolled at McGill in 2022.
Bye, a 20-year-old Arts freshman, scored nine goals and added three assists as the division-leading McGill Redbirds lacrosse team swept a pair of games last week to extend their unblemished league record to 6-0. The 6-foot-2, 202-pound attackman tallied six goals in an 11-10 road victory at Bishop's on Thursday, followed by two goals and three assists in a 16-7 home victory over Ottawa on Sunday. Bye previously played at The Hill Academy in Caledon, Ont., where he completed a semester of grad school after playing at The Hotchkiss School in Connecticut and with the USA under-18 team.
