MONTREAL –
Sophie Lajeunesse from Calgary, Alta., and
Eric Uba of Kitchener, Ont., are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending, Jan. 8, 2023.
Lajeunesse, a 5-foot-8 goaltender with the women’s hockey team, had a career-high 35 saves to earn her first collegiate shutout, a 2-0 victory over visiting Carleton at McConnell Arena, last Saturday. The 19-year-old civil engineering sophomore halted the team’s 22-game losing streak, including three in overtime. It was the fourth career win for Lajeunesse, a product of Western Canada High School, who played for the Calgary Fire, a girl’s Triple A program in Alberta.
Uba, a six-foot, 200-pound forward with the men’s hockey team, was McGill’s top scorer with three points as the Redbirds split two games last week. The 22-year-old management sophomore had one assist to set up a breakaway for the tying goal at 17:39 of the third period of a 5-3 loss to visiting UQTR on Jan. 5. Two days later, he scored once and added another helper in a 5-3 win over Royal Military College in Kingston. Recruited out of the OHL, where he played for Guelph and Flint, Uba currently ranks third among all OUA goal scorers and is tied for eighth in the nation with a dozen goals in 18 league games.
