Chaput and Poiré named McGill athletes of the week

MONTREAL – Samuel Chaput from Longueuil, Que., and Clara Poiré of Blainville, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending, Jan. 1, 2023.

Chaput, a 6-foot-1, 175-pound guard on the men’s basketball team, earned all-tournament honours at the Shovellor Classic in Halifax, Dec. 29-31, where McGill posted a 2-1 record, upsetting 10th ranked Dalhousie 85-74 in overtime and defeating Waterloo 69-46 before losing 68-50 to No.7 St.FX in the gold medal game. The 23-year-old scored 25 points against Dalhousie, a season-high 32 against Waterloo and 22 versus St.FX. Over the three tourney contests, he averaged an impressive 35 minutes of court time while scoring 69 points, to go along with 11 rebounds, four assists and three steals. He shot 44 per cent from the field (27/50), went 8-for-20 from three-point range and drained 17 of 20 attempts from the free-throw line. A product of École secondaire Lucien-Pagé in Montreal and Saint Anthony High School in Texas, Chaput played four years in the NCAA while majoring in business with Monmouth University in New Jersey, before enrolling at McGill this season for a diploma in applied marketing. He joined the Redbirds after a summer stint with the Montreal Alliance of the Canadian Elite Basketball League.

Poiré, a 6-foot-2 right-side hitter on the women’s volleyball team, played a key role in guiding McGill to a 2-1 record at the Alberta New Year’s Classic, a three-day tournament in Edmonton, Dec. 29-31, where the fourth-ranked Martlets lost 3-1 to No.8 Calgary, won 3-2 over No.5 Alberta and swept Regina 3-0. She was McGill’s most consistent player, combining good offence with solid defence. Over her nine sets played, the 23-year-old kinesiology senior collected 21 kills, 18 digs and two assisted blocks. She registered a 2.0 passing ratio (out of 3), a 32 per cent kill rate and a 23 per cent kill efficiency. Poiré enrolled at McGill in 2019 out of College Lionel-Groulx.
