MONTREAL -- Tyler Welence of Ridgewood, N.J., and Rebecca Green of Green Harbour, Nfld., are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Sept. 7, 2014.
Welence, a six-foot, 180-pound shortstop on the Redmen baseball team, batted a stellar .692 batting average last weekend, as McGill opened their season with four consecutive victories, posting a pair of doubleheader sweeps over Ottawa and Carleton. The 21-year-old bio-resource engineering junior went 9-for-13 at the plate and registered a .733 on-base percentage. A product of Ridgewood high school, he produced eight runs batted in, with three doubles, a pair of walks and five runs scored.
Green, a 20-year-old physiology senior on the Martlets soccer scored three points as McGill split two weekend games. The 5-foot-5 forward was in on all three goals in the season opening 4-3 loss to Sherbrooke, scoring once and setting up two other markers. She enrolled at McGill in 2011 out of Crescent Collegiate in Newfoundland.
Both athletes will receive a gift certificate from Ye Olde Orchard Pub.
