MONTREAL – Hockey players
Gabrielle Davidson of Pointe Claire, Que., and
Vincent Barnard of Sept-Iles, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending March 16, 2014.
Davidson, a 21-year-old finance sophomore with the hockey Martlets, scored a CIS tournament-leading nine points, including six goals, in three games to earn Tournament MVP honours while leading McGill to the CIS national championship at St. Thomas University in Fredericton last week. She either scored or assisted on 56.3 per cent of the team’s 16 goals scored. She scored twice in each game, including the winning tally in a 4-1 victory over OUA champion Laurier last Thursday, then added a pair of goals and two assists in an 8-2 victory over Moncton on Saturday. In Sunday’s gold medal game, a 4-3 victory over the RSEQ champion Montreal Carabins, she tallied the first two goals and assisted on the game-winner at 37 seconds of the second overtime. The 5-foot-4 forward finished the season with an impressive 45 goals and 67 points in 44 games overall. Davidson, who led Canada to gold at the FISU world university games in Italy over the December break, joined the Martlets in 2012 after graduating from Dawson College.
Barnard, a 6-foot-2, 205-pound defenceman with the hockey Redmen, scored a shorthanded goal and was named as McGill’s player of the game in the OUA Queen’s Cup championship, a 3-2 loss at Windsor last Saturday. The 23-year-old elementary education sophomore narrowed the gap to 3-1 with 5:28 remaining, which sparked a late rally that fell short when time ran out. Prior to joining the Redmen in 2012, he skated for the Quebec Remparts in the QMJHL.
