MONTREAL – Basketball players Mariam Sylla, a native of Conakry, Guinea and Francois Bourque of Terrebonne, Que, are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending March 3, 2014.

They also merited the RSEQ athlete of the week honours upping the tally for McGill athletes, who have now won the conference's weekly award a dozen times this season.

Sylla, a 6-foot-1 centre with the women's basketball team, scored 29 points and grabbed an impressive total of 26 rebounds as the Martlets swept Laval and UQAM at the RSEQ Final Four championship tournament last week. Over the two contests, the 21-year-old pharmacology sophomore shot a stellar 48 per cent from the field (12/25) and made five of eight attempts from the free-throw line.  She added three blocks, four steals and four assists. Sylla was named Game MVP in the league championship contest last Saturday after registering a "double-double" with game-highs in points (22) and rebounds (13) in a 63-50 win over UQAM, Before joining the Martlets in 2012, she played for College Montmorency.
 
Bourque, a 6-foot-5 rookie forward with the Redmen cagers, tallied 27 points and 20 rebounds in two road victories as the team captured the RSEQ Final Four championship tournament in Quebec City for the second straight year. He was named as McGill's Game MVP in an 82-69 semifinal win over host Laval on Friday before capturing the conference banner with a 63-50 conquest over UQAM . Over the two contests, The 20-year-old economics freshman shot 66.7 per cent from the field, making 10 of 15 attempts and went 7-for-10 from the foul line. He also had two blocks, one steal and an assist. He joined the Redmen last fall after graduating from College Montmorency.
 
Previous McGill athletes to merit RSEQ weekly honour this season include soccer stars Massimo Di Ioia (twice: Sept. 15, Sept. 29) and Max Leblond (Oct. 20), rugby's Brianna Miller (twice: Oct. 20, Oct. 27) and Cameron Perrin (Nov. 24), plus hockey players Gabrielle Davidson (Nov. 17), Samuel Carrier (Dec. 1), Katia Clement-Heydra (Jan. 5) and Mariam Sylla (Jan. 15)
 

Both athletes will receive a gift certificate from Ye Olde Orchard Pub.
