MONTREAL –
Simone Cseplo of Toronto and
Cedric McNicoll of Longueuil, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Feb. 23, 2013.
Cseplo, a sprinter with the women’s swim team, helped break five school records and was the only McGill University swimmer to reach the podium at the 2014 Speedo CIS swimming championships at the University of Toronto's Varsity Pool. The 18-year-old psychology freshman was clocked at 28.24 seconds in the 50-metre backstroke, to earn silver and All-Canadian second team status on Day 1 of the three-day meet, establishing a new school standard in 28.74. Cseplo also broke a team record in the 100m backstroke (1:01.01) and led three relay squads to team records as well, swimming leadoff on the 4x100 free (3:47.93), the 4x200 free (8:12.04) and the 4x100 medley relay (4:13.81).
McNicoll, a sophomore on the men’s hockey team, scored three goals and added an assist as the No.6-ranked Redmen swept a pair of playoff games over Concordia 3-1 and 8-4 last week, to claim their OUA East best-of-three quarter-final series 2-0. He scored all three of his goals on the power-play in the deciding contest. The 5-foot-10, 174-pound centre now has four points in two playoff games after posting a 15-20-35 record in 23 regular season contests. A 21-year-old accounting major, McNicoll was redshirted last season as he had to sit out a year after three pro campaigns in the American Hockey League with Charlotte, Albany and Lake Erie.
Both athletes will receive a gift certificate from Ye Olde Orchard Pub.
