MONTREAL – Pierre-Alexandre Renaud of Laval, Que., and Mariam Sylla, a native of Conakry, Guinea are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Feb. 9, 2013.

Renaud, a 22-year-old economics senior on the Redmen swim team, claimed three gold medals and one silver as McGill finished second at the RSEQ championship meet in Sherbrooke over the weekend. He posted the top and third-best performances of the meet, based on FINA points, which resulted in him clinching the conference’s swimmer-of-the-year award. The six-foot, 165-pound middle distance specialist set a conference record time of 2:00.23 -- surpassing the previous mark of 2:00.60 – to capture the 200-metre butterfly, which merited swim-of-the-meet honours, based on total points earned. Renaud, the team captain and an economics senior, also finished atop the podium in the 400 freestyle in 3:55.24, which ranked as the third-best point total of the weekend. His third gold medal came an anchor of the 4x200 free relay, which touched the wall in 7:35.08. His silver medal was in the 4x100 freestyle relay, which finished in 3:27.82. Before enrolling at McGill in 2010, he graduated from College Vieux-Montreal.

Sylla, a 6-foot-1 centre with the women's basketball team, scored 32 points and grabbed 19 rebounds as the Martlets swept a pair of games from UQAM last week. Over the two contests, the 21-year-old pharmacology sophomore shot a solid 40.7 per cent from the field (11/27) and 66.7 per cent from the free-throw line, making 10 of 15 attempts.  She added three steals and six assists. Sylla registered a “double-double” with game-highs in points (12) and rebounds (12) in a 62-56 home-court win last Thursday, then bounced back two days later with a game-high 20 points and seven rebounds in a 65-56 road victory. Sylla leads the RSEQ conference in both scoring (12.7 points per game) and rebounds (9.7 per game). Before joining the Martlets in 2012, she played for College Montmorency.

Both athletes will receive a gift certificate from Ye Olde Orchard Pub.
