MONTREAL – Gabrielle Davidson of Pte. Claire, Que., and Laurent Duvernay-Tardif of St. Hilaire, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Jan. 19, 2013.

Davidson, a 20-year-old finance sophomore with the hockey Martlets, scored five of the team’s eight goals in two weekend victories, as McGill extended their three-year win streak to 39 consecutive games in RSEQ regular season play. She scored the opening goal in a 3-1 win at Carleton last Friday, then exploded for four goals -- including the winner --  in a 5-2 road victory at Ottawa on Sunday. The 5-foot-4 forward leads the CIS with 20 goals in just 13 regular season games and has tallied 28 goals in 29 games overall. Davidson, who led Canada to gold at the FISU world university games in Italy last month, joined the Martlets in 2012 after graduating from Dawson College.

Duvernay-Tardif, a fourth-year medical student and an offensive tackle with the football Redmen, was one of only two CIS players invited to participate the 89th annual East-West Shrine Bowl, an all-star game for seniors played in front of nearly 20,000 fans at Tropicana Field, Saturday. The 6-foot-5, 315-pound lineman did not start the contest but gave a very credible performance under stressful conditions. In the first half, he rotated in every two series at right tackle. He started the second half and played most of the fourth quarter. He had one week of practice to prepare for the game, his first under American rules with no buffer zone at the line of scrimmage. The scouts loved his intensity during the week and one NFL draft website had him ranked in the top 10 prospects for the game by the end of the week. Duvernay-Tardif, who has won almost every award possible this season, also merited both Academic All-Canadian and Academic All-American honours. He won the J.P. Metras Trophy as the most outstanding lineman in CIS football and is currently pegged to be the No.1 selection in the upcoming Canadian Football League Draft.

Both athletes will receive a gift certificate from Ye Olde Orchard Pub.
