MONTREAL – Mariam Sylla, a native of Conakry, Guinea and Alexandre Comtois of Sherbrooke, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Jan. 12, 2013.

Sylla, a 6-foot-1 centre with the women's basketball team, scored 33 points and grabbed 28 rebounds as the Martlets swept a pair of games from Laval last week. Over the two contests, the 21-year-old pharmacology sophomore shot a solid 40 per cent from the field (10/25) and a stellar 76.5 per cent from the free-throw line, making 13 of 17 attempts.  She scored 18 points with nine rebounds in a 52-34 home-court win last Friday, then bounced back the next night with a "double-double" on the road, scoring 15 points and pulling down an impressive 19 rebounds in a 57-53 victory. The sweep over Laval extended McGill's win streak over CIS opponents to 13 games, including a 6-0 record in regular season play. Sylla leads the RSEQ conference in both points (75) and rebounds (64). Before joining the Martlets in 2012, she played for College Montmorency.

Comtois, a 5-foot-7, 180-pound rookie forward with the men's hockey team, tallied four points, including a pair of shorthanded goals in two road victories last week. The 21-year-old electrical engineering freshman tied a school record with a pair of shorthanded markers, including the game-winner, and set up another in a 6-2 triumph over Ottawa on Friday. The next day, in a crucial 4-3 win at Queen's, he added an assist on McGill's third goal as the Redmen moved into a tie with Queen's for first place. Comtois, who previously played in the QMJHL with Sherbrooke, Quebec, Rouyn-Noranda and Drummondville, joined the Redmen last fall after graduating from College de Sherbrooke.

Both athletes will receive a gift certificate from Ye Olde Orchard Pub.
