MONTREAL - Mathieu Pompei of Laval, Que., and Marie-Pier Bastrash of LaSalle, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Dec. 2. 2012.
Pompei, a 5-foot-8, 165-pound centre with the hockey Redmen, scored five points in two road victories last week. The 21-year-old elementary education freshman registered a goal and two assists in a 7-2 win against RMC in Kingston on Saturday. The night before, he tallied one goal and added an assist in a 4-2 conquest at Ryerson. Pompei is second on the team in scoring with a 7-6-13 record in 13 games. A product of the Yarmouth Mariners of the Maritimes Junior A Hockey League, he graduated from Kings Edgehill School in Windsor, N.S., in 2010.
Bastrash, a 5-foot-8 rookie guard with the basket Martlets, scored 22 points in a 78-46 conquest over Bishop's last Saturday. The 21-year-old medical preparatory freshman tied a single-game school record with six three-pointers, making 6-of-7 attempts from beyond the arc. She shot 58.3 per cent from the field (7-for-12) and was a perfect 2-for-2 from the free-throw line. She was also credited with two steals, a pair of assists and one rebound in a game-high 29 minutes of playing time. Bastrash joined the Martlets this fall out of College Ste. Foy.
