MONTREAL — The McGill Redbirds will celebrate 150 years of varsity hockey during the 2026-27 Ontario University Athletics men's hockey season, highlighted by a Jan. 31 home game against cross-town rival Concordia on the exact anniversary of the program's first recorded contest in 1877.

The complete 2026-27 schedule is now available on the McGill Athletics website as the Redbirds prepare for a season that will honour one of hockey's oldest and most influential programs.

The preseason opens Sept. 11 with the inaugural Coupe de Trois-Rivières, where McGill will face UPEI, Queen's and host UQTR over a three-day tournament. The exhibition schedule also includes a visit from perennial U SPORTS powerhouse UNB on Sept. 17 before the Redbirds travel to Toronto on Sept. 25 to renew a rivalry that dates back to the schools' first meeting in 1899.

McGill opens its 28-game OUA regular-season schedule on Oct. 10 by hosting the Nipissing Lakers at McConnell Arena. Another early-season highlight comes on Oct. 23 when the Redbirds entertain the Ottawa Gee-Gees in the annual Homecoming Game, which coincides with the McGill Sports Hall of Fame induction luncheon.

The schedule is highlighted by traditional rivalries with Concordia, UQTR and Queen's. McGill and the Stingers will meet three times during the season, including the Jan. 31 sesquicentennial celebration at McConnell Arena and the regular-season finale on Feb. 20 at Ed Meagher Arena, where the rivals will once again compete for the Corey Cup.

The Redbirds will also renew their rivalry with defending University Cup champion UQTR, which will host the 2027 U SPORTS national championship in Trois-Rivières, March 25-28, while continuing two of the oldest rivalries in Canadian university hockey against Queen's, an opponent McGill first faced in 1895, and Toronto, whose series with the Redbirds dates back to 1899.

With the national championship returning to Quebec, McGill will be looking to earn a berth at the University Cup tournament and cap its sesquicentennial campaign by pursuing the program's second national title and first since capturing the University Cup in 2012.

The 2026-27 campaign will celebrate the legacy of a McGill hockey program whose influence extends far beyond university sport. Since playing its first recorded game on Jan. 31, 1877, McGill has won 35 championships and helped shape the evolution of hockey while producing generations of leaders at every level of the game.

The program has sent nine players and seven coaches to the National Hockey League, while an exclusive group of 19 McGillians have had their names engraved on the Stanley Cup a combined 49 times. As the birthplace of organized hockey and a pioneer in developing many of the sport's earliest written rules, McGill enters its sesquicentennial season with a legacy unmatched in Canadian collegiate athletics.

One hundred and fifty years after taking the ice for the first time, McGill will begin another season looking to add a new chapter to one of hockey's most distinguished traditions.

One final editorial suggestion: because of the extraordinary significance of the anniversary, I'd consider changing the headline to "Redbirds set course for historic 150th anniversary season" or "McGill hockey unveils schedule for landmark sesquicentennial season." Those headlines put the emphasis where the story truly lies—not on the schedule itself, but on the once-in-a-lifetime milestone the schedule celebrates.

Le programme de hockey masculin de McGill dévoile son calendrier de la saison historique de son 150e anniversaire
 

MONTRÉAL – Les Redbirds de McGill célébreront les 150 ans de leur programme de hockey masculin au cours de la saison 2026-2027 du Réseau du sport étudiant de l'Ontario (SUO), dont le point culminant sera un affrontement à domicile contre leurs rivaux montréalais de Concordia, le 31 janvier 2027, exactement 150 ans après le premier match disputé dans l'histoire du programme.

Le calendrier complet de la saison 2026-2027 est maintenant disponible sur le site web des Sports de McGill, alors que les Redbirds s'apprêtent à entreprendre une campagne qui rendra hommage à l'un des plus anciens et des plus influents programmes de hockey universitaire au monde.

Le calendrier préparatoire s'amorcera le 11 septembre avec la toute première Coupe de Trois-Rivières, où McGill croisera le fer avec l'UPEI, Queen's et les Patriotes de l'UQTR au cours d'un tournoi de trois jours. Les Redbirds accueilleront ensuite les Reds de l'UNB, puissance dominante du hockey universitaire canadien, le 17 septembre, avant de se rendre à Toronto le 25 septembre afin de renouer avec une rivalité qui remonte à leur premier affrontement en 1899.

La saison régulière de 28 matchs dans le SUO s'amorcera le 10 octobre au Centre sportif McConnell avec la visite des Lakers de Nipissing. Un autre rendez-vous important suivra le 23 octobre, alors que les Gee-Gees d'Ottawa seront les visiteurs dans le cadre du match du retour à la maison (« Homecoming »), présenté le même jour que le dîner d'intronisation au Temple de la renommée sportive de l'Université McGill.

Le calendrier est ponctué de plusieurs rivalités historiques, notamment contre Concordia, l'UQTR et Queen's. Les Redbirds et les Stingers s'affronteront à trois reprises, dont le match anniversaire du 31 janvier au Centre sportif McConnell et le dernier match de la saison régulière, le 20 février, à l'aréna Ed Meagher, où les deux formations se disputeront une fois de plus la Coupe Corey.

McGill retrouvera également les Patriotes de l'UQTR, champions en titre de la Coupe Université, qui accueilleront le championnat canadien U SPORTS 2027 à Trois-Rivières, du 25 au 28 mars. Les Redbirds poursuivront aussi deux des plus anciennes rivalités du hockey universitaire canadien contre Queen's, un adversaire affronté pour la première fois en 1895, et Toronto, dont la série remonte à 1899.

Le retour du championnat national au Québec offre une motivation supplémentaire aux Redbirds, qui tenteront de décrocher leur place au tournoi de la Coupe Université afin de conclure cette saison du 150e anniversaire en visant un deuxième titre canadien, le premier depuis leur conquête de la Coupe Université en 2012.

La campagne 2026-2027 soulignera l'héritage exceptionnel d'un programme qui a largement contribué à l'évolution du hockey. Depuis son premier match officiel disputé le 31 janvier 1877, McGill a remporté 35 titres de champion et a formé des générations de joueurs, d'entraîneurs et de bâtisseurs qui ont laissé leur marque à tous les niveaux de ce sport.

Au fil de son histoire, le programme a produit neuf joueurs et sept entraîneurs ayant accédé à la Ligue nationale de hockey. Dix-neuf anciens de McGill ont également vu leur nom gravé sur la coupe Stanley à 49 reprises. Berceau du hockey organisé et pionnière dans l'élaboration des premières règles du jeu, l'Université McGill entreprend sa saison du 150e anniversaire avec un héritage sans égal dans le sport universitaire canadien.
