(VERSION FRANÇAISE SUIT)
MONTREAL – Three former McGill University players are among 157 products from U SPORTS institutions listed on Canadian Football League rosters entering Week 1 of the 2026 CFL season, which kicks off Thursday when the Montreal Alouettes visit the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
The total number, which includes 26 inactive players – from practice rosters and injured or suspended lists – is 17 fewer than last year. The U SPORTS record high is 208, set in 2021.
Over the years, McGill has produced 65 players for the CFL, including 11 who have combined to win 23 Grey Cup rings, and three who also suited up in the NFL.
The current McGill group features Montreal Alouettes defensive lineman Joshua Archibald (BA '22) of Montreal, B.C. Lions linebacker Maxime Rouyer (BEd '19) from Troyes, France, and Calgary Stampeders defensive back Benjamin Labrosse of Greenfield Park, Que., a former All-Canadian who was selected fourth overall in the 2024 CFL Draft.
A fourth McGill product who has not yet been activated on a CFL roster is offensive lineman Domenico Piazza, who was picked up recently by the Toronto Argonauts. Also missing from the group of McGillians is quarterback Eloa Latendresse-Regimbald, who was put on Edmonton's retired list as he is expected to return for a fifth season with the Redbirds.
Another McGill graduate not included in the list above is former linebacker Benoit Major (BSc '95), a CFL referee entering his 21st season in the league and has worked in eight Grey Cup games. The Montreal native wears No. 31 on the back of his striped uniform, the same number he wore as a middle linebacker when he played at McGill from 1992 to 1994. He graduated in three years, earning a science degree in 1995, majoring in occupational therapy.
The 11-team OUA conference leads the way with 61 players listed on CFL rosters, followed by the six-team Canada West division with 55. The RSEQ league has 31 players listed, while the AUS has 10. Bishop's, which returns to the RSEQ for the 2026 campaign after nine seasons in the AUS, is counted in the AUS total because its lone CFL-rostered player came out of the Gaiters' 2025 Atlantic conference season.
In total, all 27 U SPORTS football-playing institutions are represented in the CFL this summer. UBC, Wilfrid Laurier and Montreal lead all schools with 13 former players apiece on CFL lineups. They are among 10 U SPORTS football programs with at least eight players listed this year, along with Calgary (12), Laval (11), Saskatchewan (9), Guelph (9), Western (9), Alberta (8) and Regina (7).
Winnipeg, Hamilton, Ottawa, Calgary and Edmonton share the CFL lead with 19 rostered players from U SPORTS football. Saskatchewan ranks next with 18, followed by Montreal (16), B.C. (14) and Toronto (14).
Defensive backs are the most common position occupied by U SPORTS products, with 31 players currently listed on CFL rosters. Offensive linemen are next with 28 roster spots, followed by linebackers (25), receivers (23), defensive linemen (17), fullbacks (11), running backs (8), long-snappers (7), kickers (5) and quarterbacks (2).
McGill will open its 155th year of football operation on Aug. 22 with a preseason game in Toronto against the Varsity Blues, marking a historic renewal of one of the sport's longest standing rivalries. The Redbirds then kickoff the 2026 U SPORTS regular season on Sept. 5 at Bishop's. The campaign culminates Nov. 28 with the 61st edition of the Vanier Cup national championship at Stade Telus in Quebec City.
NOTE: CFL roster information based on the 2026 roster file, updated as of June 1/26.
