QUEBEC CITY — Emilia Diaz-Ruiz of the McGill University women's basketball team has been named winner of the Sylvia Sweeney Award for student-athlete community service. She was among the laureates announced Wednesday night at the All-Canadian Gala in Quebec City, host of the 2026 Sunlife U SPORTS Final 8 presented by Michelob and Hilton Québec.

Other major honours went to Brock's Madalyn Weinert (Nan Copp Award as player of the year), Western's Sydney Cowan (Kathy Shields Award as rookie of the year), Calgary's Amélie Collin (defensive player of the year), Queen's guard Bella Gauden (Tracy MacLeod Award for courage in overcoming adversity) and Saskatchewan bench boss Lisa Thomaidis (Peter Ennis Award as Fox 40 coach of the year).

Sixth-seeded McGill, the RSEQ conference champions, will open against No.3 Calgary, the Canada West champs, on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. Eastern when the tournament tips off in the Amphithéâtre Desjardins at the Centre PEPS de l'Université Laval. The four-day tourney concludes Sunday with the gold medal game at 5 p.m. Eastern. Tickets for all 11 games can be purchased at usportstickets.ca and the entire championship will be webcast live on CBC digital platforms in English and Radio-Canada's digital platforms in French. 

Diaz-Ruiz becomes the first McGill player to receive the honour since it was initiated in 1994, which is rather fitting given that Sweeney, a former national team captain, once played for the Martlets and was inducted in 2021 to the McGill Sports Hall of Fame.

A 19-year-old native of Hamilton, Ont., Diaz-Ruiz merited second-team all-star status in the Quebec conference. The six-foot forward was McGill's second-leading scorer and top rebounder this season, averaging 11.1 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. A consistent double-double threat, she recorded four on the year, including two against division-leading Laval. In a game against UQAM, Diaz-Ruiz scored 10 points and collected 18 rebounds, becoming only the fourth player in program history to grab 18 or more boards in a single contest — five shy of the school record of 23 set by Sweeney in 1974.

A chemical engineering sophomore, Diaz-Ruiz posted a 3.82 grade-point average (out of 4.0) in her freshman year to qualify for Academic All-Canadian status and the President's Student-Athlete Honour Roll. In January 2026, she received the Prof. Dorothy Nichol Award, presented annually to a McGill student-athlete who combines academic achievement with contributions to extracurricular activities.
 
She has earned multiple academic scholarships, including the Richard Herzer Entrance Award in chemical engineering, the Frank A. Sherman Memorial Scholarship for top academic standing, a Faculty of Engineering Award for ranking in the top 15 per cent of her class and the Dr. Sean Pierre African Caribbean Award, which recognizes academic success and community leadership.
 
Off the court, Diaz-Ruiz has served on several campus committees, including the National Society of Black Engineers, the Chemical Engineering Students' Society, the McGill Athletics Black Heritage Month campaign and the McGill Athletes in Business Society. In those roles, she has helped coordinate events, connect with sponsors, engage students through outreach initiatives and support academic development opportunities.
 
She edged out three other conference nominees for the Sweeney Award, including Natalie Allison (Victoria), Amy Hagman (Queen's) and Melina Collins (Dalhousie).

Emilia Diaz-Ruiz de McGill remporte le trophée national Sylvia-Sweeney

QUÉBEC — Emilia Diaz-Ruiz, de l'équipe féminine de basketball de l'Université McGill, a remporté le trophée Sylvia-Sweeney, remis à l'étudiante-athlète s'étant le plus illustrée par son engagement communautaire.

Son nom a été dévoilé mercredi soir lors du gala des étoiles canadiennes tenu à Québec, ville hôtesse du Final 8 féminin 2026 de U SPORTS, présenté par Sun Life en collaboration avec Michelob et le Hilton Québec.

Les autres honneurs majeurs ont été attribués à Madalyn Weinert, de Brock (trophée Nan-Copp, joueuse par excellence), Sydney Cowan, de Western (trophée Kathy-Shields, recrue de l'année), Amélie Collin, de Calgary (joueuse défensive de l'année), Bella Gauden, de Queen's (trophée Tracy-MacLeod pour courage face à l'adversité) et Lisa Thomaidis, de la Saskatchewan (trophée Peter-Ennis, entraîneuse de l'année).

Les Martlets de McGill, classées sixièmes têtes de série et championnes du RSEQ, amorceront le tournoi jeudi à 14 h 30 (HE) face aux Dinos de Calgary, troisièmes têtes de série et championnes de Canada West, à l'Amphithéâtre Desjardins du PEPS de l'Université Laval. Le tournoi de quatre jours prendra fin dimanche avec le match pour la médaille d'or, prévu à 17 h (HE). Les 11 rencontres seront diffusées en direct sur les plateformes numériques de CBC (en anglais) et de Radio-Canada (en français).

Diaz-Ruiz devient la première joueuse de McGill à recevoir cet honneur depuis sa création en 1994. Le choix revêt une signification particulière puisque Sylvia Sweeney, ancienne capitaine de l'équipe nationale canadienne, a elle-même porté les couleurs des Martlets et a été intronisée au Temple de la renommée sportive de McGill en 2021.

Originaire de Hamilton, en Ontario, Diaz-Ruiz est âgée de 19 ans. L'ailière de six pieds a été nommée sur la deuxième équipe d'étoiles du RSEQ cette saison. Elle a terminé au deuxième rang des marqueuses chez les Martlets et au premier rang pour les rebonds, avec des moyennes de 11,1 points et 7,8 rebonds par match. Menace constante pour un double-double, elle en a réussi quatre cette saison, dont deux face au Rouge et Or de Laval, champion de division.

Lors d'un match contre l'UQAM, elle a inscrit 10 points et capté 18 rebonds, devenant la quatrième joueuse de l'histoire du programme à atteindre ce plateau dans un match — à cinq rebonds du record universitaire de 23 établi par Sweeney en 1974.

Étudiante de deuxième année en génie chimique, Diaz-Ruiz a maintenu une moyenne de 3,82 sur 4,0 à sa première année, ce qui lui a valu le statut d'Académique canadienne ainsi qu'une place au tableau d'honneur du recteur pour les étudiants-athlètes. En janvier 2026, elle a également reçu le prix Professeure-Dorothy-Nichol, remis annuellement à un étudiant-athlète de McGill qui conjugue excellence académique et engagement parascolaire.

Elle a obtenu plusieurs bourses d'études, notamment le Richard-Herzer Entrance Award en génie chimique, la bourse commémorative Frank-A.-Sherman pour rendement scolaire exceptionnel, un prix de la Faculté de génie pour figurer parmi les 15 % supérieurs de sa cohorte ainsi que le Dr.-Sean-Pierre African-Caribbean Award, soulignant la réussite académique et le leadership communautaire.

En dehors du terrain, Diaz-Ruiz s'est impliquée au sein de divers comités sur le campus, dont la National Society of Black Engineers, la Chemical Engineering Students' Society, la campagne du Mois de l'histoire des Noirs de McGill Athletics et la McGill Athletes in Business Society. Elle y a contribué à l'organisation d'événements, au développement de partenariats et à des initiatives de mobilisation étudiante.

Elle a devancé trois autres candidates mises en nomination par leur conférence respective pour le trophée Sweeney : Natalie Allison (Victoria), Amy Hagman (Queen's) et Melina Collins (Dalhousie).
